Beyond Busy? Try Microtasks
I wonder if you are anything like me.
Do you have too many ideas, projects, opportunities and just not enough time?
And worse than that, finding more than 10 minutes to dedicate to a task is almost impossible?
And when I say not enough time, I mean, really not enough time. Being 100% responsible for the survival of two small human beings, combined with working and keeping life on track, doesn't leave much time.
I have found myself recently becoming increasingly frustrated by the traditional time management and productivity advice. It just doesn't cut it.
Stop watching TV. Are you joking? I did that years ago.
Get up an hour earlier. If I start getting up any earlier, I'll have to stop going to bed.
Prioritize better. Please. There is nothing like two small children to help you prioritize.
So, where do we go from here?
What a revelation! I have been using them for the last couple of weeks and I am getting so much more done. Without microtasks, this article would never have been written.
So, how do they work?
- Start a list in the morning of 3 - 5 tasks you can do in 10 minutes or less
- Do them when you have a window of opportunity
For example, this article was written broken down into the following Microtasks.
- Brainstorm article ideas
- Outline article
- Scribble article frantically fast
- Type and edit
So there you have it. No need for large blocks of time (when was the last time you have one of those spare) or to start getting up at 4am.
I'd love to know what your favourite productivity tool is when you are beyond busy. Let me know.
